Technology, Transhumanism and Toddlers

Recently, a friend lent me a nice book entitled Books the Build Character: A Guide to Teaching Your Children Moral Values Through Stories.  While it provided an overall great book list as a resource (personally, I’m not a huge fan of Maurice Sendak), I felt somewhat sad that the world the author was writing for didn’t quite exist anymore.  While I know “there is nothing new under the sun,” it seems like things have changed greatly since the book was originally published in 1994.  I wish the world was even as simple as it was for me growing up in the 90s.

It seems that my son’s generation (he is now 3) will have far more temptations surrounding it. From opportunities for literal transhumanism experiences to all kinds of gender bending wierdness all going against God’s created order.  I feel there is a strong need in the very early toddler stage before a child can even read to simply create a love of God’s created order and God’s created things: people, forests, trees, animals, general peacefulness, and even educational books that reinforce the order of language, numbers and basic science.  And of course Saint’s lives written for children.  After all, when they are alone in their room, they are only left with a memory of the story and the pictures by which to tell their own.

It’s not necessarily that I see my own son at huge risk for these things (who does see their own child that way) but I want him to be actually saddened by how things are in today’s world and how they affect those around him and even grieve The Heavenly Kingdom.  I wonder if his generation carrying the last, or nearly the last flag of Christianity will feel their hearts in a perpetual Lent – living life in a beautiful melancholy.

I realize since the issue of transhumanism and everything else is so new, there is no “time tested” method to deal with these temptations other than trying as hard as possible to live the traditional Orthodox Christian life.  Father Seraphim Rose says that even if we try our hardest, however, our neighbor is not…no matter how we try to protect our children from “modernism” we can’t.  These days I have seen children watching videos on their ipads in even the mostly unlikely places.

It would seem that since the “world outside” is trying to bombard us with messages to confuse us and won’t even reflect, let alone reinforce, God’s order anymore – I may have to work harder as a parent at this.  It is probably more important to reinforce gender identity, the traditional family, and love of God’s creation through early literature, when this was probably something taken for granted by previous generations.  In other words, I don’t read books about robots to my son, but prefer to read books that have something beautiful and human in them.  (For example, today we picked up some books from the library including one about a family that moves from the city and builds a house in the country with the help of family and friends, and another about a family that runs a small farm.) I know there are probably books about robots that are “moral” and “cute” but there are too many reasons to not read the robot book for me. Among all the other agendas, there is indeed a transhumanism agenda as well.  When my son learns about robots, I want him to learn the whole story about them in an age appropriate way…so no “cute” robots for us for now.  The agenda is pretty evident is most modern media, so if you don’t already notice it, these links probably won’t help much, but just in case:

I lived the first almost 7 years of my life without computers…and while I can’t tangibly remember the freedom that gave my soul, somehow I can feel the change and how technology has grown and grown and could completely drown my soul if I let it.  Someday my son will be on his own and making his own decisions.  I want him to feel the ache in his heart like I do.  I want him to long for simpler and more beautiful times after he finds himself making mistakes.

But someday soon I will tell my son as much as I can for his age, and keep telling him more as he grows.  It will be an “Orthodox Survival Course” for children until he is ready for the real thing and to start his own Orthodox Christian reading.  But for now, I just tell him “I wish I could tell you more, but for now all I can say, ‘the hour is very late’.”

Vaccinations: Are you on auto-pilot?

blog image

I took my son to a routine check up today just because it was something I felt I should do for the “government records” or whoever is keeping track of these things.  There was something that felt so dark about the office, but it should be no surprise that it feels dark when the purpose of “well-child” visits is mostly vaccination.  While I think there is nothing inherently evil in wanting to protect people from contracting serious illnesses, I do think there is something inherently evil in vaccines that contain the cells/DNA from aborted fetal tissue.  I have been debating writing this post for a while thinking that people are better off left in ignorance because once you have been convicted that many vaccines are unethical, you may be taking a difficult path in life in the next couple decades (such as undesirable relocation to another state if unethical vaccinations become mandatory or homeschooling until age 18).  But its time to wake up!! We have the internet…Mostly a time waster, and a community destroyer, this thing called the internet also has some good information and useful tools, including that we are currently allowed to access information about VACCINES!

Vaccines are full of toxins.  That is bad.  We are to treat our bodies like temples of the Holy Spirit.  Vaccines can cause bad reactions in some people and destroy the God-given immune system.  If you do some research, you will also find that some vaccines  are made using ABORTED FETAL TISSUE.  This is NOT a conspiracy anymore. The information is available.

There are ethical vaccines available (well, more ethical at least) but people so blindly follow the orders of pediatricians that few people have made a issue of it.   (Remember the hospital last year that was found out to be using aborted fetal tissue as ENERGY…Yes, our world is on the decline).  Maybe we think of persecution as trying to force Christians to worship a pagan God like in centuries past, but it can also be the subtle coercion of Christians into collaborating in the evil of abortion and providing gradually increasing consequences for not doing so.

Remember, when you read the Bible and thought, if that horrible future every comes while I’m alive I’ll be strong enough.  I will do the right thing.  Doing the right thing and being strong during the last days, probably includes not accepting vaccines containing the cells of aborted children. Well, we don’t know when Jesus is returning, but things are getting worse NOW!  It is time NOW to stick to principles in a world that wants to destroy your soul.  But the exciting thing is that JESUS HAS WON! CHRIST HAS RISEN!  and we just need to FOLLOW HIM!  We need to pick up our cross..even when it is hard, or hard to believe that society has grown so numb to something like aborted fetal tissue in vaccines.

Below are the links related to the aborted fetal issue in vaccines…Do your own research… And if you are shocked to find this out and had no idea, God forgives!  But in the spiritual deadness of today’s world, for those who need a push to do their own research and stop burying their head in the sand, I thought I would write this blog to be one more voice sharing with your the dark reality of vaccines.

For anyone who wants a sober look at what is going on in today’s world, I recommend a book I just read called Orthodoxy and the Religion of the Future by Father Seraphim Rose available here:  Orthodoxy and the Religion of the Future

Other note – Foster children have to be vaccinated, so that is probably a situation where I (personally) feel there is a true greater good at stake..

Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) are No Good!

When I first heard of genetically modified organisms at some point in the last decade or so, the very thought made my skin crawl.  I had seen the movie Gattaca as a child and that was one of the first things that came to my mind.  In the movie Gattaca, new humans are born based on genetic selection – a eugenics process.  Similar to what happens in the book Brave New World.  So it seemed that allowing the genetic modification of food could be a slippery slope…If we start tampering with our food, it would not be long before we start tampering with human beings.  (If you count gender-based abortion and childhood euthanasia the medical community is already marching down this path.)

But that was not the only thing…it just seems wrong.  Do you know what I mean?  Remember, instances as a young child when you just had a gut feeling something was wrong even though it was never explained to you?  There are just those things that as human beings, many of us, instinctively know to be wrong thanks to our Creator who wrote His law on our hearts.  The importance of respecting God’s creation is one of those things to many of us.

But what if someone is born with a deformity like a cleft palate?  Do we not provide reconstructive surgery if possible? Of course if possible!  I guess that is the difference.  Somehow there is a difference, this invisible line, between tampering with nature – God’s creation – and employing the tools given to us by God to help others.  Its difficult to describe, but somehow many of us feel and sense this line.

Within God’s creation, we know what a human being is generally like and we know what an apple is generally like.  They come in all kinds of shapes and sizes and they are all good.  This is the diversity and beauty of Gods creation.  I can travel the country and taste apples and oranges from hundreds of farms and each one will taste just a bit different (maybe some so subtle that I cannot even tell), reflecting the beauty and love of our God.  God’s creation is His sacred work.  Doesn’t it just seem wrong to tamper with it?   Do we really have the audacity to say that we know better than God?  Or was it God that gave us the tools to tamper with his creation, and therefore the work is blessed?  Many argue that if God gave us the ability to do something, it must be of Him and it must be His will.  Well, He also gave us the ability to do MANY things that we know are wrong (which I will not write here)… at least we used to know this much.

But, GMOs help feed the poor!  We must distribute them everywhere!  We can create food faster and better!  Who cares if it all taste the same! Who cares if it attempts to destroy God’s footprint in his creation! Who cares if it slowly sickens the people eating them! It does not take much of a Google search to discover that research shows GMO crops are likely overall unhealthy, destroy soil, contain few nutrients, and are laden with pesticides.  They are so modified internally that they produce their own pesticides (called Bt) internally to kill pests!  Meaning, without any added pesticides, these non-poisonous plants are engineered kill life and, on top of this, are often drenched in additional pesticides and herbicides.  GMO crops are modified to be resistant to herbicides making it is easier for farmers to spay herbicides directly onto the crops without “damage.”

God turned water into wine, turned five loaves of bread into thousands and has sent manna down from heaven.  God has shown that He will provide for our needs – the world poverty argument just seems weak to me.

Then we have the issue of Genesis 1:29: “Then God Said,” I give you ever seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it.  They will be yours for food.”   The Bible says that God gave us seed bearing fruit.  GMOs destroy the crops ability to produce life giving seed.  These crops last for one generation and then you have to buy more from Monsanto.  This is wrong on so many levels!  (Not to mention the fact that Monsanto thinks that it can patent life and threaten smaller farmers who happened to have GMO seed blown onto their farm by the wind….but that’s a whole other story and there are plenty of great documentaries about this important topic).

So do I eat GMOs?  I try to avoid them as much as possible.  I would say 95% or more of what we eat at home is GMO-free.  So far, only corn, soy, canola, cotton, sugar beets, most Hawaiian Papaya, some zucchini, and some yellow squash are GMOs.  It is easy enough to avoid corn, soy, and beet sugar, if you eat healthy unprocessed food.  If you look for cane sugar instead of beet sugar on your ingredients lists, it is likely non-GMO.  (I try to avoid soy whether GMO or not since I do not think it is very healthy, but the Trader Joes brand is supposed to not have any GMOs though the products have a lot of non-gmo soy filler.)  Eating out or at potlucks is the biggest concern for confronting GMOs.  And every now and then I buy something with GMOs for my husband who likes to eat some junk food.  The verses in Corinthians help me deal with GMOs; (1 Corinthians 10: 24 – 26: Let no one seek his own good, but that of his neighbor.25Eat anything that is sold in the meat market without asking questions for conscience’ sake;26 For the earth is the Lord’s and all it contains.” This verse is not totally related as it was about food actually offered to idols, but it helps my conscience eat food that may or may not contain GMOs.  In a way, I feel that GMOs were made for the “idol” of “corporate greed” and possibly “secular humanism” – at the very least, metaphorically speaking.

I think GMOs are wrong, on so many levels, but I also can’t go broke trying to avoid them and shouldn’t spend all my time thinking about how to avoid them or whether the food that I’m served at a restaurant, friend’s house, or potluck contains them.  Sometimes I think of refugees in other parts of the world that are probably given GMO-filled food for all of their meals.  I pray and hope that God will bless their food and miraculously turn it into something full of health and life.
